Fingerstyle "cheating"?

After my One on One lesson with Nate yesterday, he tabbed out a few bars of a song for me. Reading it, there is a G major chord where you aren't playing the high E string. Question is, would playing the easier G6 chord be legit, since you aren't playing the high E string anyway?

When I learn fingerstyle songs I usually just figure out the specific notes that are being played and then I realize later that "oh, I'm just playing a G shape here" even if I'm not using all of the notes in the chord. The nice thing about just making the entire chord G chord shape is that you can just go with what you already know and what you are already familiar with. I would much rather think about putting a simple G major shape on than making a G6 but either way you want to think about it is fine.
