Finger Style Practice Exclusively?
My initial post on Guitar Fam; feels great to be "home" with Nate and Chelsea! Since I began my Finger Style obsession a few months ago, my practice has been virtually 100% on honing this specific skill. I rarely strum anymore, and other things I was working on such as power chords and cross picking have been left behind in my quest to improve and reach my goals, which are as follows:
1- Short term goal: continuing to improve my Finger Style technique.
2- Mid term goal: Making music, playing songs to the best of my ability Finger Style.
3- Long term goal: refining numbers 1 and 2, and being able to figure out a finger style pattern that works with a specific song.
4- Ultimate (and maybe unrealistic) Goal: all of the above with being able to figure out the chords just by listening to the song. (Have to admit, this goal may be out of reach for me, but keeping it on radar).
I'll put this out there to all the Fam: Is this the right strategy for my very specific goals?
Awww... thanks Irwin. It's been so nice getting to know you "in person" over the past few months with the private lessons. Speaking from some personal experience, you are eventually going to need to work on that strumming and get it up to the level of your finger style. I use strumming quite often in the finger style songs that I play, even if it's just for a second. I think that the progress that you've made with finger style is going to go a long way and bleed over into your strumming abilities to make them better in the future. As far as your goals... I think you know what I'm going to say. Try to get more specific with the songs and put a deadline on them. Also, timing should be one of the main consistent goals (both with finger style and strumming). See you tomorrow morning!
@David Lieder Yeah, you might think that, but Irwin has really found his Niche. Timing, smoothness and a lot of other things have really come up a notch or two. :)
