ai music theory lessons

so i thought i'd have chatgpt teach me a bit about some minor scales. normally i do my own research, but i wanted to see how effective the tool can be. i've had mixed results in a variety of uses for ai, sometimes creating great templates, sometimes way off the mark or flat out wrong.

i first inquired about natural minor vs. harmonic minor. answer made sense... same as the natural minor but with a raised 7th similar to the major scale 7th.

then i asked about hungarian minor. this is what it told me...

The Hungarian minor scale, also known as the double harmonic minor scale, is a unique and exotic scale that differs significantly from the natural minor scale. Here's a detailed comparison between the two:
Hungarian Minor Scale:

    Scale Structure:
The Hungarian minor scale is constructed with the following intervals:
        1, 1/2, 1, 1, 1/2, 1, 1/2.
        For example, in A Hungarian minor scale: A, B, C#, D, E, F, G#.

right off the bat, the formular doesn't add up to 12 half steps. a quick look at the notes chatgpt thinks are in hungarian a minor reveals that it is actually the a major scale with a flattened 6th. this dog won't hunt, monsignor.

and what does every google result say about the notes in the hungarian a minor?

The A Hungarian minor scale is a seven-note scale consisting of the notes A, B, C, D♯, E, F, and G♯. The scale corresponds to the A natural minor scale with the fourth and seventh degree raised a half step.

Its step pattern is W, H, +, H, H, +, H, where W indicates a whole step, H indicates a half step, and + indicates an augmented second (three half steps, enharmonically equivalent to a minor third but functionally distinct). In intervallic terms, it would be described as: 1 2 ♭3 ♯4 5 ♭6 7.

so will ai rise up and destroy humanity? perhaps. but i'm not such a pessimist. i think the odds are equally good that ai destroys humanity accidentally by reinforcing incorrect biases in the training data.... and in the end, it's really the intent that matters... i'll feel so much better knowing my destruction was an accident. and if i sing my final dirge out of tune, just remember it was chatcpt that taught me the hungarian minor scale.

Very interesting! I'm familiar with natural, melodic and harmonic minor scales from music theory class in college, but I've never heard of the Hungarian minor scale. You learn something new every day!
