Learning while BS’ing
So @Norm Gagnon and I were chatting this evening. It got to Alternate tunings & voicing I use. While discussing why I use them and how I play various chords we got to the using all 6 strings vs 4 or 5 to play some chords. I discovered that when using Drop-D tuning I can play a C while fretting 6th string with thumb on 2nd fret and end up with C/E. I like the E in the bass; pretty cool. Then Norm mentioned the chords in Seminole Wind; which I play and sing. I discovered I can play an A/E with the E on the 6th string again and then I can play the entire song using all 6 strings for all 4 chords (did I mention that I like bass?). I already knew how to play Em, G & D in Drop-D using all 6 strings.
Ya never know what you might come up with when simply BS’ing with a friend.
I've been watching Lily-Ann playing these days and thinking about how play and discovery are synonymous for her. This thread reminds me of that and I hope we never lose the fun and playfulness of exploration and discovery on the guitar.
As for the C/E debate 😄, for me, it's all about the context. I like hearing it within the context of a walk-down on the bass. Let's say I have the chord progression C - D - G and I want the bass to walk down rather than just play the root notes. Then I might play C/E - D/F# - G to get that effect.
