tuxguitar

for those who are looking for a free opensource tool to create or play guitar pro files, check out tuxguitar. it runs on linux, windows, mac os, and android. you can speed up or slow down, show multiple instruments, transpose to different keys, and show notes on the fretboard. it even has a practice mode tempo setting that will randomly speed up or slow down.

i use it with gp files i've purchased (like the marcin tab below) or downloaded (like from tabs.ultimate-guitar.com). not only great for practice, but also to modify tabs that aren't quite right (like the ones downloaded from ultimate-guitar).

simple. works. free.

did i mention free?

i always assumed it was a random up/down tempo, but you're right... it is supposed to gradually increase the tempo in the selected loop. i use a different method for speed building.

saw a fair bit of bug fixes in the new version that was released end of august, so that may have fixed the issue for you... try upgrading to 1.6.4 if you are on an older version.

my biggest gripe is that it doesn't pick up the correct theme (stays light instead of bright) on linux... i like to play in a dark environment, and a white bg kills my eyes. that may be a gnome thing... i've been too busy to fix it, but it's probably just a matter of adding the correct desktop configuration file (gnome vs kde, etc.).

i've had the same cursor focus issue in guitar pro when hitting repeating sections.

the only true issue for some might be that it doesn't yet support gp6 files, and only supports gp3, 4, and 5.

still, for free vs. $$ for guitar pro, it does what i need.
