4 Gear - The Music Room

It's About Time

I had a hard time getting used to using a metronome. The visual and audible indicators on my phone app were out of sync. I decided to look for an old fashioned wind-up metronome so I coud visually adjust. Turns out that mom still had the one she bought for the music room more than four decades ago, and it was an antique back then. Sure, it is plain, with only a single click, and yes, the slide is bent a bit and some tempos can't be maintained because the weight slips in spots, but there is something to be said for having a physical device in front of you. I have since adjusted to the phone app, but I still use this one frequently... when I need to wind it, it is time for a break, and the imperfections of it's timing as it winds down keeps me on my toes.

More than that, there is a sense of music history... Who owned it originally? What did they play? I try to make my practice spot a music sanctuary filled with inspiration. It helps keep me motivated.

John Church company, circa 1900 - 1920.

This is so cool!! How fortunate that your mom had this. What a neat way to get inspired to use the metronome.
