string theory

i will soon be ordering a new guitar. i'm still torn between nylon and steel string for acoustic. i prefer the feel and playability of nylon, and the tone to some degree. i would like to get a little more in the top end. i figured i'd try a variety of nylon strings on my old yamaha before deciding... typically i use the d'addario pro arte strings.... going to try some nylon high and normal tension with carbon and titanium cores...

anyone have any experience with any nylon / carbon or nylon / titanium strings?

i'll update this with my experiences after i try a few sets... it won't take long at the rate i burn thru them.

UPDATE 12/2: i tried the d'addario xt titanium... they are super bright... makes the classical guitar sound almost like a steel string. i found the basses to be too metalic and thin sounding... no warmth. i believe the xt carbon and xt titanium use the same bass strings. the titanium trebles were a bit over bright as well. i'll put these strings on sometime in the future, but as i plan on getting some recording done today, i swapped out the xt titanium trebles for the xt carbon trebles, and swapped out the basses for the pro-arte basses.

the xt carbon trebles have a more resonance and brightness compared to the pro arte. they are perfect for flamenco. i'll try out the xt carbon basses in the future and update this post. for now, i'd consider getting just the trebles with a pro arte set of basses unless you want that snap. i am hoping the carbon trebles loose a little brightness over the next few days... that would land them in the perfect tone once broken in.

as for the d'addario xt titanium... they might be better suited on a steel string guitar to give it a "classical feel" instead of trying to brighten up a classical guitar... the lightweight bracing doesn't seem paired well with the metallic ring of the titanium.

i may order a set of real gut to try. if so, they'll be the next test. otherwise, savarez will be up to bat. i'll be back when i burn thru another set... until then, stay musical my friends.

I used the Pro-Arte for the longest time an dtried the Savarez. I was surpised at how much I liked the Savarez. That was ages ago back in my classical era. Let us know what you get!
