string theory ii

call it a gut feeling, but i think these are going to sound amazing.

real gut strings by aquila and pyramid. the pyramid basses are nylon "silk". i have some aquila rayon "silk" and real silk basses on the way.

you may be thinking, "isn't putting expensive strings on a cheap guitar a lot like dressing a pig in pearls?"

yes. yes, it is. and it will be the sweetest oink you'll ever hear. and then they strings come off. my current guitar isn't prepped for gut strings... the nut would need to be chamfered to use these beyond a short test, and might even shred a new string just tuning.

i'll use the pyramid basses to compare to d' addario pro arte's. these basses don't need special prep (only real silk requires special "above the nut knots"..

i'll risk the aquila trebles on the ol pig, not just to see how it oinks, but to get a feel for gut strings... i'm in the final phases of specing out a custom classical guitar build, and will likely have it configured for gut strings... but gut is a very different material than steel or nylon... has a different stretch to it, and a bit of a grip compared to slippery nylon. it has some significant operating limits, so i need to get a feel for how it operates at various tensions. the aquila's are varnished and cheaper, so they are best for testing.

i have learned more about strings this past year than i thought possible... how tension, material, and shape influence volume, resonance, and even vs. odd order harmonics.

most interesting of all, i learned i have an "h" string. didn't know that until i started researching european string makers and harpist sites.
