I was talking to @Nate Savage in my lesson yesterday about finger style. This is something that I really want to learn. Here is Ralph Mctell streets of London, it is a long term project, maybe six months or more. Having grown up in North London, this song had a big influence on me. I really would love to be able to play the bass, harmony and melody. I thinks it’s a beautiful way to play guitar.
@AndyWright.
Andy, you had mentioned an interest in this piece back during a strumming zoom session you hosted that I was able to attend. I had learned the piece a while ago, but didn't stick with me well, so am working to recover it. I had discussed this briefly with Nate and he had made a couple suggestions. Anyway, here's a start... just the chords for part a, so you can start to learn the chord progression. Part b will come a bit later. Eventually I'll do tab and a recording. It's a folksong style, so is relaxed. Alternating bass eventually, (hence the low F# wraparound thumb at bar 7 for the D7/F# chord lol). Enuf to start?
Allan.
PS: Oh style just 'pluck' each chord once on beat one, there (eventually) is an alternating bass on beats 1, 2, 3, 4 and hi string Embellishments on beats 2, 3, and 4, just to help you visualize the song structure, so to start, just pluck the whole chord on beat one, let it ring on beats 2, 3, and 4, then pluck the next chord. Onward! 😀
Edit2: typo the D7/F# chord not D7/F d'oh! Also marked a 1st half and 2nd half, as 2nd half is repeated after bridge/part B at end of song.
Also added the bridge/partB chords. Played on the inside 4 strings, makes a very lovely descending progression.
Apologies, I don't have any cool software, just freehand pencil and quad ruled paper.
I'll knock out a proper tab, both with alternating bass, and final perform. Now to figure out how to record it lol.
Edit: hmm. I'm still working on some of the subtleties of theory... so I may be saying this wrong, but the alternating bass seems to be [(chord tones) 1, 3, 5, 3, 1]. 3 tone above root, 5 tone below root, etc. Chord pluck with tone1.
Kind of a Travis Picking style? Feel free to correct if i'm off lol. Still learning.
Onward!

Excellent! I look forward to hearing how it goes. Congrats on the progress you've made so far!
