My First Guitar Pedals
A couple of weeks ago, I thought I would try out my first pedal. I thought a little slapback delay might sound good with some of the rockabilly music I like to play so I looked for a delay pedal that had some options and wasn't crazy expensive either. I bought a Donner Echo Square from the Donner Store on eBay for $38. Afterwards, I was looking at other pedals and found some other pedals that were reasonably well rated on YouTube and was able to pick up used pretty inexpensively from eBay; a Donner Verb Square (reverb) for $21, a Donner Metric Bender (chorus, phaser, flanger) for $17, and a Kmise Vintage Overdrive for $15. Was able to try them out for the first time with my Yamaha Pacifica today.

The Verb Square is definitely cool as it has more options to choose from using it versus using the reverb on the amp (which sounds good too).
I like the Echo Square delay. I set the mix in the 12:00 position and kept time and feedback rather lower since I just wanted to get a short pop. Maybe I should turn up the feedback more to get a little more emphasis on that pop?
The only other pedal effect that I thought might be worth considering for the music I like was a chorus pedal. But when I was on eBay I came across this Donner Metric Bender that does chorus, phaser, and flanger effects and was pretty inexpensive. I hadn't seen it before so I think it must be one no longer in production anymore. I could see trying out the chorus on some songs; but I personally don't see myself using the phaser or flanger effects much. A pretty cool pedal though.
The only one I was a little disappointed in was the Vintage Overdrive. It sounded pretty similar to the overdrive on my amp so nothing new really gained. If anything, I think I slightly prefer the overdrive on my amp.
That works!
