Is it Okay to Take Breaks From Playing Guitar?

Hi fam,

Do you ever feel like you need a break from practicing guitar? I recently had two private lesson students who brought this topic up with me, so I figured I would use their stories to start a conversation on this topic.

There are a million reasons we could need to take some time away from the guitar, and that’s okay. We could be burnt out, frustrated with our lack of progress, or simply in a very busy stage of life, but taking a break doesn’t necessarily mean that we will loose all of the ground that we fought so hard to gain. In fact, taking a break can make us more productive in the long run as long as we have a consistent and effective practice routine as an underlying foundation for our progress.

Some of the benefits of taking short or longer breaks from the guitar are perspective, physical recovery, and inspiration. These are covered more in the video. Let me know your thoughts and experiences in the comments. I’m looking forward to reading them.

Thanks for watching,

Nate

P.S. If you need a resource for ironing out a customized practice plan, you will want to check out the free Guitar Fam Practice Plan course here on the site.

I have been off my guitar for almost 2 yrs, first i had an injury that kept me away for 5 months then life got busy, then I had a second injury which i am trying to get back from, plus i have bad internet which keep me away from my guitarfam friends 8-(. Now i really want to get back to it but i am being a coward, i am afraid that i lost too much and i am afraid to take my guitar... I do realise thought, that while i was not playing, i kept thinking about my guitar and realise that i really like fingerstyle guitar above everything else, so when i finally pick my guitar again,…

Oh No! I didn't know this Line. So sorry to hear this. Yeah, it's going to be frustrating getting back into it, but I think it will come back faster than you think. It's nice to have that added focus of fingerstyle in there to. I encourage you to just go for it and jump back in!
