Have you ever been jamming with a friend and completely frozen? You get to a part of the neck and your mind goes blank. Or you watch someone else navigate the fretboard effortlessly and think "I have no idea how they do that."
The feeling like everyone else got a map and you didn't is one of the most frustrating things in guitar. And it's more common than you think.
In this week's video we dig into the two main reasons guitarists get lost on the neck.
The first is that most of us don't really have the notes on the guitar memorized cold. We know a few landmarks but the majority of the fretboard is a mystery.
The second is that we don't have a framework for organizing the neck into manageable chunks. Without a system, the guitar feels like an overwhelming wall of possibilities with no clear way in.
The good news? You don't need to tackle the whole fretboard at once. We start with one string (the B string) and use the D major chord shape as a movable reference point to give those notes context and make them stick.
It's a small step but it's the right first step. And if you know your basic open chords, you already have everything you need to get started.
