Why I Created the Blues Hound...

I’m Nate Savage. I've spent 30+ years playing guitar and 15+ years helping adult guitarists get unstuck.

I struggled to play the blues over chord progressions without sounding like I was just playing scales for the longest time. I thought, "If I just keep practicing these scales, things will sort themselves out." But they never did.

That led to some major frustration. I even asked many famous guitarists how they thought about playing over chord changes. I never got a straight or satisfying answer.

One day, I finally got so fed up with it that I decided to dissect the blues for myself and figure out why the notes my heroes played sounded so good, but mine didn't.

I ended up discovering that the answer was not in big minor pentatonic or blues scale shapes. The answer was in smaller scale fragments and the chords that were going by in the blues progressions I was playing over.

Phase 1 - Blues Rhythm Guitar

Everybody wants to solo. But the guy who can hold down a rhythm is the guy who gets asked back. This is where the whole thing starts, and it's the most important module in the course.

Build the rhythm foundation that makes you a player other people want to jam with.

Get the 12-bar blues so far under your fingers you could play it in your sleep
Start building your shuffle feel — the thing that separates blues from just notes
Learn 3 essential blues riffs you can pull out the second someone says "blues in A"

Phase 5 - Blues Foundational Solo

Time to play a real solo. Not a lick. Not an exercise. A full, musical blues solo you can play over a track, and then take apart until you understand every choice inside it.

Play your first real blues solo, and understand every note in it.

Put your bends, your fragment, and your 12-bar knowledge into one complete solo
Pick it apart bar by bar so you understand it instead of just copying it
Take it one measure at a time until you can play the whole thing to the jam track

Phase 4 - Blues Music Theory

This isn't theory for the sake of theory. This is where you stop guessing and start knowing why the notes you play work, and why the ones you keep avoiding don't. Everything after this gets easier.

Understand what's actually happening underneath the blues.

Start with the major scale and see exactly how the blues scale is built from it
Find out why blues progressions go where they go
Learn how 7th chords are made and why they are the sound of the blues

Phase 3 - Start Jamming & Improvising

Someone hands you a guitar and says "take a solo." If your stomach just dropped reading that, this is the module. You'll walk out with two reliable ways to always have something to play.

Never freeze up again when someone says "let's jam."

Start improvising with your ear and one small fragment — no giant scale shapes required
Use B.B.'s Box to solo over a full 12-bar without getting lost
Always have something ready for the 1, 4, and 5 chords instead of guessing

Phase 2 - Blues Inflections

Here's the truth nobody tells you: the notes aren't what make it sound like the blues. What you do to the notes is. This is where a pentatonic fragment stops sounding like an exercise and starts sounding like music.

Learn the handful of things that turn notes into blues.

Start with one small minor pentatonic fragment. You need far less than you think
Get real control over your quarter, half, and whole-step bends (this is the big one)
Add slides and vibrato. These are the fingerprints that makes your playing sound like you

Phase 12 - Dominant 7th Arpeggios

A different way to hit the changes. Instead of hunting for good notes inside a scale, you go straight to the notes in the chord. It's a sound you've heard a thousand times and probably couldn't name.

Nail the chord changes from a completely different angle.

Understand how dominant 7th arpeggios work and why they lock onto the chord
Get the shapes under your fingers so you can use them without thinking
Work them into the Foundational Blues Solo

Phase 11 - Major Pentatonics

Ever wonder why your solos come out dark when the record sounds sweet? This is the missing piece. The major pentatonic is the other half of the blues sound, and you already know most of what you need to get it.

Phase 10 - Minor Blues

Phase 9 - Spreading Your Knowledge to Other Shapes

Phase 8 - Double Stop & Turnaround Lead Licks

Double stops are the sound of Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray, and about a hundred records already in your collection. They're also easier than they sound. Two notes at a time, enormous payoff.

Work double-stop licks into your playing for a completely new flavor
Take your turnarounds off the rhythm side and into your solos
Apply all of it to a new solo over the quick-change progression

Phase 7 - Quick-Change Blues & Turnarounds

The last two bars of a blues are where a lot of players fall apart and just trail off. Turnarounds fix that. And the quick-change progression hands you a second form you've heard on loads of the records you love.

Add a new progression, and finally know what to play in the last two bars.

Take the 12-bar you already know and grow it into the quick-change blues
Add turnaround licks that instantly sound like the records you grew up on
Land the end of a progression with confidence instead of fading out

Phase 6 - Playing Over Blues Chord Changes

Time to play a real solo. Not a lick. Not an exercise. A full, musical blues solo you can play over a track, and then take apart until you understand every choice inside it.
