Chord Quiz #4 2025 (Tuesday January 28)

So the chord this week is not meant to be hard. In fact it is very easy on purpose.

We had some great discussions the past couple weeks and i hope we keep it up.

So, please let us know how you prefer to play this chord and/or your favorite variant. Diagrams will be helpful (you can find them on the web or draw them). Why and or when do you play your preferred variant?

a common chord shape with a ton of uses. i use this shape frequently in caged progressions further up the neck where open chords can't be used. I also like this shape when i switch between major chords and major 7 / dominant 7 / minor 7 chords b/c it is an easy finger change...

if i keep the root in the bass, i'll use the tip of my index finger to mute the low E... hard to wrap a thumb around a wide classical neck that close to the nut. that said, i often play music that keeps the bass notes in a tighter progression instead of jumping all over the place. b/c of that, i often barre the low E and use an inversion of the chord. for example, bach uses a G C D progression, but inverts the C and D chords to keep the bass line fluid... G (F#) E F# (E) F# E (F#) G, with the notes in parenthesis being played without a chord... so the G is in normal position, but the D is a D/F# and the C is a C/E. in this shape, the 5 is on the low E, right next to the root.

i am less likely to use a mini barre then 3 fingers, usually b/c that leaves the fingers free to cover a melody. if i'm just strumming and i'm at fret 7 or beyond i'll likely use either my ring finger or pinky finger to create the mini barre for convenience, but in the end, it really depends on the chord progression and what makes my fingers do the least amount of work.

i also frequently use the B7 shape @Andy Wright posted... along with the Bmaj7 shape that is identical except with the A moved to A#.
