"Landslide"

Due to copyright law, downloadable jam tracks are instrumental only. Use the video above if you wish to play with the vocal version.

Over the past few years, I’ve had quite a few requests for a fingerstyle guitar lesson on “Landslide,” so we’re happy to finally bring it to you.

This lesson is complete with:

  • Full step-by-step video

  • Jam tracks

  • TAB

Everything you need to make learning this song as smooth (and fun) as possible.

Not As Simple As It Sounds…

When I first listened to this song, I remember thinking:

“This will only take me a couple of weeks to get down.”

It’s very pattern-based, and at first glance it feels straightforward.

But after digging deeper, I noticed something important — there are quite a few variations and transitional phrases throughout the song. Those little details are what really stretch out the learning process.

So while it sounds simple, it’s more detailed than it appears.

Two Ways to Approach It

If you want to play an easier version:

Just use the foundational fingerstyle pattern presented in the video and apply it to the chord progressions in each section. That alone sounds great and captures the feel of the song.

If you want to go deeper:

Follow the TAB and work through the variations and transitional phrases that give the song its character.

Because there are two guitars playing through most of the original recording, I did standardize a few things and simplify certain variations. That way, you can learn a detailed version of the whole song without it taking months.

I think this arrangement still does a great job of capturing the essence of the original.

How I Recommend Practicing It

  1. Get the chord progressions down for each section

  2. Add in the standard fingerstyle pattern

  3. Layer in the variations and transitional phrases

Build it in stages.

This one is tougher than it appears at first — so give yourself time with it.

Be patient. Enjoy the process.
